Raising Daughters: Hair Confidence Starting Young

posted on December 21, 2016Leave a Comment

Did you know 8 out of 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way? As a mother, teaching your daughter to have care for themselves creates more confidence as they grow up. This post is a collaboration with , but all opinions and adorable daughters are my own.

Raising three girls in this world isn’t always easy. There are things that I didn’t even have to consider when I was growing up–especially social media and technology. I didn’t even get a cell phone until my freshman year of college! Facebook arrived my junior year–right around the same time of texting. Yes, I’m getting old.

I am fortunate to have three very strong and different personalities with my daughters. They all test and challenge me daily, but I know that they have amazing souls and will conquer the world someday–no matter what they choose to do.

Growing up, I’ve always embraced my curls. Not saying I always knew how to tame them, but straightening my hair has never really appealed to me. I’ve tried various crazy colors, but essentially I keep it almost my natural color. In 11 years, my husband has seen my hair straight ONCE! I’ve had my share of awful haircuts (1994 was a rough year: short hair that turned out to look like a flat top!) and I’m finally learning how to control them. I feel like all curly girls (and Justin Timberlake) went through a stage with crunchy, shiny gelled curls, am I right?!

Gabriella, my youngest, has the curliest hair of the three. I’m teaching her to embrace the curl and NOT brush through them. Some nights, I’ll catch her brushing away until she looks like Don King! She loves to wear her hair down with cat ears–because who wouldn’t love to feel like a lioness!? She loves that she looks like Mama.

My twins have different hair types completely and it’s starting to be their hair that is their identifying feature, although I think it’s pretty easy to tell them apart. Last spring, Olivia decided that it was time for her to have shorter hair so she could “be her own person”. As a baby, her hair was super thick and curly, but over time the curls have turned to waves. Maddox has thin hair which has a beautiful wave when you scrunch it–she loves it long like a princess so she can accessorize it

The girls had so much fun taking selfies with me for the . We really appreciate their images in magazines and on television–they are showing girls how to embrace themselves and love who they are. Dove™ has women of all shapes, colors and sizes in their advertisements, which is such a ray of positivity these days. Since my girls are mixed, we want them to embrace everything they are and what makes them unique, especially their hair.

Do you want to try the with your daughter? Head over to the now! The girls wanted to make sure ALL selfies were included in the post–truly, I couldn’t leave one out!
